Easter in Mexico
I looked for info on Easter in Guatemala, but was unable to
find anything about my daughter's birth country. Mexico is a close Latin
American neighbor-so I am including the information I found abut how Easter is
celebrated there.
In Mexico, Easter is a combination of Semana Santa or
Holy Week which is Palm Sunday to Easter Saturday and Pascua which is
Resurrection Sunday until the following Saturday. Semana Santa celebrates the
last days of the Christ's life. Pascua is the celebration of the Christ's
Resurrection. It is also the release from the sacrifices of Lent. In many
communities, they may enact a full Passion Play from the Last Supper, the
Betrayal, the Judgement, the Procession of the 12 Stations of the Cross, the
Crucifixion and last but not least the Resurrection. In some communities,
flagellation and/or real crucifixion might also be included. The enactments are
often spectacularly staged, costumed and acted, with participants preparing for
their roles for nearly the full year leading up to Semana Santa
At our
house, we celebrate by going to church, and then out to eat with family or
friends. Sometimes we stay home, and sometimes we travel. Easter egg hunts have
also been popular.
